HANDICAPPING

An insight into the handicap system employed for our yacht racing

At a recent Committee meeting it was decided to move away from our "local" handicaps to a system that began in the South West and is fast becoming the norm. It is called "YTC" and is promoted by the RYA (over their Portsmouth Yardstick scheme) and is administered by the RORC.

YTC, unlike its stable mate IRC, is a free service and is reasonable easy to gather together the necessary information to produce a certificate. More information can be found HERE and the general background to the system HERE.

As the RORC website states: The system will be open for 2025 applications in February but the process of gathering your yacht's data could start now! If you find it too daunting please speak to your club rep as the series will be putting together a plan to help our competitors make the transition. The great advantage of this move is not to have anybody involved with our racing involved in setting the handicaps.

YTC is truly club based and each Club will have to register as for example the Royal Harwich has already. Please put aside a little winter reading time to become familiar with the system and we trust you will see it as a positive move.
